Media guidelines

This family of measures consists of interventions which attempt to optimise the communication about suicides in order to promote correct and ethical information about the phenomenon, as well as to avoid contagion effects.

It is considered an educational family because it is concerned with the way in which public information, messages and discussions about suicide should be framed, as well as how to educate journalists on this matter. In addition, the measures in this family aim to reduce the consequences after an incident.

Measures in this family may also refer to concepts such as: media management, news reports, newspapers, broadcast interventions, journalism, journalists, suicide imitation / contagion / replication, copy-cat acts, copycat effect, Werther effect, Papageno effect, memorials, mourning, mortality salience, death priming, moratorium on the reporting of suicidal behaviour, etc.
